This studies aims is to examines the figurative language in Justin Bieber’s song Love Yourself to explore how linguistic devices enhance emotional expression and depth in popular music. This paper uses the theory of figurative language by J. A. Cuddon (2013), saying that figurative language is the usage of figures of speech. Using qualitative content analysis methodology, this paper identifies and analyzes three key figurative elements: symbolism, irony, and hyperbole. The findings reveal that symbolism in the lyrics conveys emotional belittlement and personal growth, while the irony employs sarcasm to critique the woman’s unlikable character, and the hyperbolic statement exaggerates disapproval towards the woman. These findings collectively transform a personal breakup narrative into a relatable situation, forming a closer bond between the songwriter and the listeners. Furthermore, the methodology used offers a replicable framework for analyzing other works in the pop genre, it has the potential of revealing similar layers of meaning in simple musical compositions.
